The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description in lieu of Federal Specification GGG-T-581.
This commercial item description covers high speed steel taps with American Standard taper pipe threads (NPT) and American Standard straight pipe threads (NPS).
Salient characteristics.
Material. High speed steel
Finish. Ground
Chamfer. Threads chamfered from 2 to 3-1/2 threads on NPT taps and 3 to 5 threads on NPS taps.
Hardness. Rockwell C58 to 66

Tap marking. To be marked in a legible and permanent manner with the manufacturer’s name or identifying trademark; thread size and series ; “G” or “Ground” for ground finish; “HS”, “HSS” or “High Speed” to indicate high speed steel and “LH” or “Left hand” for the left hand threads if applicable.
Workmanship. All taps shall be free from imperfections which may affect their appearance, serviceability or durability.
